The good bench under a tree in afternoon sun

Dreeym / Life

The Ten-Minute Life.

Everything that matters within ten minutes' stroll of your door: post, milk, neighbours, water, the good bench. A day here runs on lighter fuel.

07:40

Morning

River mist off the water. First swim of the season for the brave; the kettle and the heron for the wise.

14:00

Afternoon

The long table at The Hearth — bring a dish, borrow a drill, settle a friendly argument about roses.

21:15

Evening

Wine on the deck. Owls in the oaks. Nobody, anywhere, is mowing anything.

The social heart

The Hearth,
at every community.

A members' room with a long table, a log burner, a book swap and the best noticeboard in the county. Coffee mornings weekly, carols annual, quiz contentious. Attendance always, always optional — you're as involved as you feel like being, and never alone unless you'd rather be.

The people

Real neighbours, really here.

Every resident pictured is real, and really lives here — that's a standing pledge, not a caption.

We thought we were downsizing. In truth we upgraded almost everything — the view, the neighbours, the pace. I only wish we’d done it sooner.Margaret & David · Willowmere · since 2024

Our daughter cross-examined the paperwork for an hour before we moved. She left with the family pack; we left with the marsh view. Everyone’s happy.Sue & Alan · Saltmere · since 2025

“Why didn’t we do this sooner?” is practically the anthem here. The sums took an afternoon; the house sold in three weeks. Ask anyone at the long table.Pam & Terry · Foxbarrow · since 2024
